Yet, my other most anticipated movie of the year There Will Be Blood seems to putting a bit of a kibosh onto Javier Bardem's Oscar for No Country. Daniel Day Lewis has started picking up awards left and right as a rascally oilmen in the early part of the 20th century. The LA and NY Film Critics, the precursors to award season, have given Lewis the nod. (BBC)

It's December, so it's time to get out there and see a movie. One of the two mentioned are I'm sure worthy. There's also Juno, which is rocking the box office. A unique comedy about teenage pregnancy with the kid from Superbad and Arrested Development, as well as Jason Bateman under the direction of Ivan Reitman's kid Jason (whose previous effort was the pretty successful adaptation of Thank You For Smoking). Sounds like an indie Knocked Up to me.
Somehow I got roped into The Golden Compass this weekend. IT was aquite the beautiful mess. It looks excellent. The cast is quality but the film is inexplicably confusing and purposefully vague and half-hearted. It seems like they took a good script and cut all the meat out of it leaving 100 min movie feel like a 200 minute movie. A movie should never feel its length. And that's why The Golden Compass bombed with $20 million dollar opening for a movie that cost $250 million.

Read a book. Here's a couple I've read recently:
"Post Office" by Charles Bukowski, "Thank You For Smoking" - Christopher Buckley, and Sweet and Low by Rich Cohen, A Family History of Sweet and Low which I never actually use.
